I've always veered towards the present tense, my theory being that I like the way characters don't know what they're learning. But after ditching too many stories at the one third mark, I'm having a pop at writing something in a combination of past and present and it feels much less constraining that I imagined.

With present tense, I suppose I tend to (as the story teller) overwrite the bad things happening so the character learns from them/gets that they're in a bad place. Writing in past tense and using hindsight, it feels like I can be far more natural and apply a lighter touch.

It might be why I have abandoned so many stories after 30k words as they get too intense and feel heavy handed.

Anyone else find this?

Got this in an email with a request to pass it on to y'all:

Writer's Bloq is currently accepting manuscripts. Please refer to the details below and forward onto your respective literary communities:

Writer's Bloq is a book accelerator. We function as a publicity partner, helping our authors get discovered through creative spunk and digital dazzling.

We're seeking manuscripts… so basically we're soliciting unsolicited manuscripts, if you will.

Why choose Writer's Bloq? It's said most self-published authors get less than 100 readers for each novel. But really, most authors are lucky if they get 20 readers. Need proof? We did too: http://www.writersbloq.com/why-writers-bloq/.

You write. We get you discovered. Submit here: www.writersbloq.com/submit.
Contact us at team@writersbloq.com
